Several people suffered serious injuries when an auto accident occurred on Dec. 11 in Salt Lake City. One witness reports that the car crash occurred when a sport utility vehicle drove through an intersection against a red light. The car then struck at least two other vehicles before it hurtled into one of the work bays in a nearby Jiffy Lube. Workers and customers scampered out of the way, though two were struck and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the SUV had two children in the car with her at the time of the accident, though neither was injured. The driver was not injured, but another woman in the SUV was taken to the hospital.
Salt Lake City police are investigating the cause of the accident. At least six witnesses have come forward to assist them in determining who was at fault in this collision. Though no official cause has yet been reported, it certainly appears as if the SUV driver caused or substantially contributed to the auto accident.
As such, the driver may well face personal injury claims by one or more individuals hurt in the crash. Utah law specifically provides for accident victims to recover monetary damages for their injuries and pain and consequent suffering occasioned by the negligent or reckless acts of another. Distracted driving or driving under the influence are often the cause of accidents such as this one.
Personal injury claims can result against a driver who is the cause of an auto accident. Though no fault has yet been formally assessed here, there were certainly many injuries and much damage.
